Nothing is closer to my heart than the act of mentoring. I love thinking about it, talking about it, developing it, and all out doing it. The reason it is so close to my heart (besides just how God has designed me) is that I think that mentoring is one of the BIGGEST MISSING LINKS IN THE PROCESS OF DISCIPLESHIP.
What students need are God-fearing men and women TO DO LIFE with them. Where they bring the truths of Christ in a genuine relationship. My heart is see this happen. To see more intentionality in our discipleship of students. To not rely on youth ministry programs where students are lost in the crowd. Or depend upon small groups leaders to shepherd 9 plus students effectively. Andy Stanley says it best, “Do for one, what you wish you could do for all.”
During the course of my college career , I was in the honors program (nerd… I know) where I got to pick any topic that really interested me and research it like crazy. You can guess what I chose. MENTORING! At the end of my four years I created a mentoring program for churches to be able to use. Specifically geared towards at-risk youth, but many of the principles are interchangeable.
If you’re a mentoring geek like me, have any resource suggestions, or would like some yourself feel free to comment.
